What’s the worst thing about Instagram marketing for you? Is it trying to find a half decent image to share to your Instagram feed, that matches up to the beautiful quality and brightness of everybody else’s? Is it coming up with witty captions that generate engagement and keep those ‘likes’ coming in? Perhaps you struggle to come up with Instagram hashtags when you’re posting?

For me, it’s a combination of all of the above. For right now, though, I’d like to target that last one — struggling to come up with Instagram hashtags. In fact, I would like to tell you all about this neat little trick I learned.

I like to call it …

The Super Quick Instagram Hashtag Trick

Okay, so, this isn’t some genius thing that I just come up with. It’s a tool that you already have on your phone, that you can utilise to work for your Instagram marketing strategy.

It’s all very simple. You just create shortcuts on your phone, so that when you insert a few simple letters or words into the Instagram hashtag spot, your phone fills in the rest for you. You’ll be left with 25 (or however many you choose) hashtags that you haven’t just had to spend ten minutes typing out.

Here’s how you do it …

STEP ONE:

Put together a list of 100 or so hashtags that you can use to promote your posts.

*TIP*

If you sign up to my Blogging 101 email list at the bottom of this blog post, you’ll get FREE access to my resource library. It contains THOUSANDS of hashtag suggestions, covering ALL blog niches.

STEP TWO:

Separate them into groups of 25, so that you have 4 groups of 25 totally different hashtags.

STEP THREE:

Copy one of your hashtag “batches”.

STEP FOUR:

If you’re you’re using an iPhone, click on SETTINGS > GENERAL > KEYBOARD > TEXT REPLACEMENT.

Click on the ‘+’.

Paste your “batch” of hashtags.

Add a shortcut that you’ll use later to prompt the hashtags.

*TIP*

Don’t make the shortcut something that you’d type on a regular basis. Otherwise, when you text or use the word in a message or for another reason, it’ll activate the shortcut and replace the word with a bunch of hashtags each time.

Use a shortcut such as HTAG1. It is unlikely that you will use that particular combination of letters/numbers for another reason.

STEP FIVE:

Repeat step three again for each of the batches of hashtags you created in step two. Give the other batches shortcuts such as HTAG2, HTAG3, or HTAG4. If you have day-specific batches, using hashtags such as #throwbackthursday or #motivationmonday, name them HTAGMON and HTAGTHURS to make them easier to use and remember.

It’s up to you which shortcuts you set. Just make sure that they’re easy for you to remember. If you have multiple hashtag batches — beauty-specific, food-specific, location-specific, etc., you could always create a list of shortcuts in your Notes app. The more you use them, the more you will remember them. Eventually, you won’t need to refer back to the list.

*TIP*

If you batch together 25 hashtags that are vague and generic, such as #beautyblogger, #fashion, etc., you still have room for 5 more hashtags. Instagram allows for a maximum of 30 hashtags. You can add the extra 5 more specific ones at the time of posting, throwing in hashtags for the day/occasion/product you’re focusing on in the upload.

STEP SIX:

When you need to type in your hashtags in Instagram, type in the shortcut instead. When you type in HTAG1 (or whatever shortcut you have decided on), it will be replaced with the hashtags.

  1. I already have a set of hashtags that I rotate, but I love the idea of grouping some together and I’d have never thought of using the shortcut function to make life easy!! Thanks so much for this 🙂 xx
