I’m one of those people who desperately want to be vegan but just can’t give up steak. (I also get a little poorly when I go totally meat/dairy free.) I could go into my thoughts on vegetarianism/going vegan all day long, but you’re probably not here for that. Perhaps I’ll tap up another blog post about it? Would you want to read it?
Because of my many failed attempts at being a vegetarian, I decided to call myself a “flexitarian”. I read the term online somewhere and I’m pretty sure it just means making it up as you go along; having some vegan/vegetarian days along with meat-eating days. I have plenty of “vegetarian” days by accident, but I just can’t seem to make that final leap.
I can, however, create an animal-friendly makeup bag, which is what I’m attempting in 2018. The first product I added to my collection was Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in the shade ‘Trooper’.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner – Trooper
I can’t actually remember where I got this eyeliner from, but I’m almost 100% sure it came with a beauty box of some description. It might even have been a freebie from somewhere … I should remember this stuff. The point I’m trying to make is that I didn’t buy this product for myself. I received a 0.2ml miniature version.
There goes my miniature obsession poppin’ off again …
I know the packaging isn’t really *that* important, but I have a hundred bottles of eyeliner in my makeup bag that have no labels on them. The words have worn away. I couldn’t tell you what brand they were, how long I’ve had them, nothing. I should probably throw a few of them away to be honest. I’m such a makeup hoarder.
I love the packaging of Kat Von D’s products as a whole, but I really love the simple rose and star pattern on my little tube. Even better than that — none of it has worn off.
I like a thin but flat paintbrush-style applicator for my liquid liner, but Kat Von D Tattoo Liner doesn’t have one of those. It’s a flexible, superfine applicator/brush. We didn’t get along so well.
I wanted to love this eyeliner so much. I wanted to wax lyrical about it, telling you all how it changed my liner-life. I’m sad because I can’t say that. I actually had quite a hard time with it.
To start with, the applicator tugged on my skin, making it impossible for me to get a really straight line. Again, I have much better luck with flatline brushes than pointed ones, but I found the product itself was a bit ‘tuggy’ too. I managed to have better luck with Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner when I used that to create the bulk of the cat eye look (outer eye), with a flat, longer brush for the inner eye to the middle section.
Secondly, it dries in seconds; quicker than any other eyeliner I’ve EVER tried. You might think that works in your favour when it comes to cleaning up spills, but you’re wrong. Once it’s there, it’s there. I found it really difficult to neaten up, even with concealer.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner dries very shiny. It’s the shiniest liner I have in my collection. I’m not sure if ‘Trooper’ is the blackest shade on offer, but I personally think it fades to an almost grey-black and shimmery finish. I found myself going over it with a quick coat of my current regular eyeliner to ‘matte it up’ — Essence Waterproof Liquid Ink Eyeliner. It’s the cheapest eyeliner I’ve ever purchased, but definitely one of the best for me.
Although I didn’t have the best of luck with this eyeliner, the one thing I can say about it is that it lasts forever. Kat Von D wasn’t kidding when she gave it the name ‘Tattoo Liner’. It’s actually like a tattoo; once it’s there, it’s never coming off again. I went to bed without taking my makeup off a couple of nights whilst wearing Tattoo Liner (bad!), and it still took a really good scrubbing with a baby wipe AND eye makeup remover the morning after to get rid of it.
If you want an eyeliner that’ll last all night, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner is most definitely one I’d recommend. It has more staying-power than everything else I’ve tried.
10/10 for that.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner – My Thoughts
Humph. I’m really disappointed. I don’t think the product is bad, but I do think that we aren’t meant to be. I sighed immediately when I saw the kind of brush/applicator it had, although I actually had slightly better luck with it when I applied using an old (washed) brush of the style that I DO like. I still think it tugged and pulled at the skin a bit though.
Although this isn’t an eyeliner I would buy again, my experience hasn’t put me off buying any of the other Kat Von D beauty products. The staying power was impressive. If the other items have half as much, I’ll be more than happy.
I would LOVE to know if you tried this eyeliner or any other beauty products by Kat von D. If you have any eyeliner suggestions for me, that would be fab too. Thanks in advance. (Ten extra points if it’s vegan.)
Thanks so much for reading.
